Madrid Protocol: Contracting Parties

Registration of U.S. trademarks may be obtained in any or all of the nations listed below by means of a single application to the Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks under the Madrid Protocol. This application, based on an existing U.S. application or registration, is initiated in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The nations in bold are currently members of the European Union and are individually contracting parties to the Madrid Protocol.  Malta, which is also a member of the E.U., is not an individual contracting party to the Madrid Protocol, but protection in Malta is included when extension of protection is granted by the Union. The African Intellectual Property Union currently includes 17 African nations who are not individual contracting parties, but are included in an international registration (extension of protection) granted by the Union.
