There are several different types of patents. The one generally thought of, and usually meant, when the term "patent" is used, is the utility patent. This is the means of protection of an invention that is both novel and useful, whether an apparatus, device, process, method, or other "patentable" matter. The other types of patents are design patents and plant patents.
