Title Page - Inventor(s)

All inventors and their places of residence are listed under the patent's title. Every invention belongs first, exclusively, to its inventor or inventors, and the patent is very often cited by reference to the first-named inventor's surname rather than by its title -- e.g., Patent No. 5,559,664 of Dogul et al. (see other examples below, in the patent text). When there are more than one inventor, absent an agreement among the inventors to the contrary, each inventor separately owns full right and title to the entire invention. This means that each inventor, individually, may license or assign rights in the invention without regard to the other inventors, and without diminishing the separate rights of the other inventors; and that the entire right and title to the invention cannot be exclusively assigned to another person, or to a business entity, unless all inventors participate in the assignment.
